Electronic access control has transformed how businesses manage security. From key cards to biometrics, learn about the technology that's replacing traditional keys in commercial buildings.
Physical keys served businesses for centuries — but they come with serious limitations. Keys get copied, lost, or stolen. When an employee leaves, changing all the locks is expensive. You have no way to know who entered what area and when. Electronic access control solves all of these problems.
Electronic access control (EAC) systems replace mechanical key locks with electronic credential readers. Each user has a credential — a key card, fob, PIN code, or biometric identifier — and the system logs every access event in real time.
The most common commercial credential. Users hold their card or fob near a reader that detects the unique ID code. When an employee leaves, you deactivate their credential in the software — no locksmith required.
No physical credential to lose. Users enter a code on a keypad. Multiple codes can be set for different users, with each code logged independently.
Smartphones communicate with Bluetooth or NFC readers to grant access. No card to carry and access can be instantly revoked remotely.
Fingerprint, palm vein, or facial recognition systems provide the highest credential security — credentials cannot be borrowed, stolen, or lost. Ideal for server rooms, pharmaceutical storage, or high-security areas.
Modern EAC systems integrate with video surveillance, intrusion alarms, time and attendance, and HR software — creating a comprehensive security ecosystem.
